Fragment 9

The sculpture has semi-spherical caps in painted fiberglass and a central section in golden proportion in durmast wood mounted on a stainless steel base. Reminiscent of industrial and organic shapes, this archetypal and minimalist object encloses an empty space inside, which cannot be known by the observer. The sculpture is therefore a membrane between an exterior and a mysterious interior.
As a sort of abstract self portrait, the concept of this sound sculpture refers to a fragment by the Portuguese poet Pessoa in The Book of Disquiet: “My soul is a hidden orchestra. […] I only know myself as a symphony”.
The energy of the acoustic vibration of an internal loudspeaker activates the sculpture by reproducing different fragments of 9 symphonic movements that have been also chosen based on the acoustic characteristics of the sculpture. Thus the inner space (the interiority?) of the sculpture resonates and is partially revealed to the outside as the sound of “a mysterious orchestra”.
